Menhir Arte Contemporanea è lieta di presentare SCORDÌA, mostra personale dell'artista Sebastiano Sofia.

SCORDÌA, paese siculo in provincia di Catania, è il luogo dove l’artista fonda le sue radici, dove si reca a “nascondersi” con l’obiettivo di ritrovare quell’autentica genuinità primordiale; il paesaggio viene guardato non solo con gli occhi ma con tutto il corpo, cercando di respiralo. Questo è l'esercizio che ha portato alla creazione della mostra. Secondo l’artista, l’esistenza è generata da un desiderio, da un’ambizione: cacciare, accoppiarsi, nutrirsi, sono bisogni naturali e primordiali. Accettare la semplicità di queste azioni crea e muta il fare umano. I lavori presenti in mostra, sia nei personaggi che nella tecnica con cui sono realizzati, esplorano il tentativo di rappresentare quella semplicità ritrovata; la pittura e la scultura si fondono, si guardano, giocano tra loro facendosi da sfondo l’uno per l’altro: laddove le pitture fanno da cornice alle opere scultoree, queste a loro volta ne richiamano i dettagli.

Transitorietà e movimento sono metafore che traspaiono dalla materia lavorata da Sofia, il quale ricerca costantemente la sovversione delle categorie di specie e genere. Si forma presso la NABA di Milano, dove si specializza nella scultura, suo mezzo espressivo principale. Nel 2013 viene selezionato per il programma di residenze Viafarini a Milano e, nel 2015, per una residenza presso la Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa di Venezia. Dal 2014 partecipa a importanti mostre collettive e individuali in Italia e negli Emirati Arabi, tra le quali “Anemone" a Palazzo Monti di Brescia nel 2019, “Natural Metamorphosis” alla Fatma Lutha Gallery a Dubai e una personale di fine residenza presso il Maraya Art Centre di Sharjah nel 2018.

Menhir Contemporary Art is pleased to announce “SCORDÌA”, personal exhibition of the artist Sebastiano Sofia.

SCORDÌA, a Sicilian town in the province of Catania, is the place where the artist founds his roots, where he goes to "hide" with the aim of rediscovering that authentic primordial genuineness; the landscape is looked at not only with the eyes but with the whole body, trying to breathe it. This exercise led to the creation of the exhibition. According to the artist, existence is generated by a desire, by an ambition: hunting, mating, feeding, are natural and primal needs. Accepting the simplicity of these actions creates and changes human doing. The works on show, both in the characters and in the technique with which they are created, explore the attempt to represent that rediscovered simplicity; paintings and sculptures blend, they look, play and form the background for each other: where the paintings frame the sculptural works, these in turn recall their details.

Transience and movement are metaphors that transpire from the material worked by Sofia, who constantly seeks to subvert the categories of species and gender. Sofia was selected in 2013 for the residency program Viafarini, Milan. In 2015, he joined in the artist’s residence at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice. Since 2014 he has participated at important collectives and individual exhibitions in Italy and in the United Arab Emirates, including “Anemone” at Palazzo Monti in Brescia, “Natural Metamorphosis” at the Fatma Lutha Gallery in Dubai and, in 2018, he presents an end-of-residency personal exhibition at the Maraya Art Center in Sharjah.
